Brief introduction to FMTP technology

Naphtha cracking is usually used for industrial production of low carbon olefin such as ethylene, propylene, etc. The disadvantage is too much dependent on petroleum. The process route from methanol to low carbon olefin, such as methanol to ethylene or propylene is the most hopeful route that can substitute naphtha feed stock to produce olefin. At present, the process technology development and commercial application are mature.

Since 1999, Beijing Key Laboratory of Green Reaction Engineering and Process of Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University has started research in methanol and dimethyl ether to low carbon olefin. It has developed propylene production process by using SAPO-34 catalyst and fluidized bed reactor (FMTP), which is fully different with fixed bed MTP technology developed by Lurgi. Many national patents of invention have been applied for the relevant research results by Tsinghua University.

Fluidized bed methanol to propylene (FMTP) technology is developed jointly by China National Chemical Engineering Group Corporation, Tsinghua University and Anhui Huainan Chemical Group. It is the key breakthrough technology under the "a new generation of strategic alliance for coal (energy) chemical industry" with China National Chemical Engineering Group Corporation as the chairman. In 2009, 30kt/a methanol commercial plant has been completed. The test result is good, which has received high evaluation from domestic experts.

On November 27, 2009, fluidized bed FMTP industrial technology development fruit has passed technical evaluation with several members of academy of engineering organized by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. Evaluation commission agreed that "process of the commercial pilot plant is scientific and reasonable, the operation is safe and reliable. It is of high technological innovation. The key technical indices and overall technical level are in the world leading position". In the meantime, the evaluation commission also believe that "FMTP technology makes pluralism of the feed stocks for production of low carbon olefin. It conforms to national conditions and have good prospect for promotion. It is of far reaching importance for facilitating healthy development of coal chemical and driving sustainable development of national economy".

Based on commercial pilot plant, with latest research progress, the cooperative party has made deep research in new type catalyst.

FMTP technical features:

SAPO-18/SAPO-34 molecular sieve is used, and yield of reaction product low carbon olefin is relative high.
Adjustable range of propylene and ethylene output is flexible, and propylene yield is relatively higher. Ethylene /propylene can be adjusted with the range of 0.02 ~ 0.85. For different capacities, it can not only produce one product propylene, but also produce olefin products with propylene as main composition. Single pass propylene /ethylene yield can reach 2.
By circulation conversion of low carbon olefin, total yield of target product can be increased.
Less high carbon hydrocarbons by-product (naphtha)
Independent olefin reactor and methanol reactor are used, which is easy for adjustment of product mix.
Unique gas solid counter-current contact operation is carried out, which can reduce back mixing in fluidized bed reactor, thus refraining side reactions such as hydrogen migration, olefinic polymerization, etc. And it is easy to control reaction temperature, and be favorable for improving feed stock conversion rate and selectivity of target product.
Wear resistant property of catalyst is good and abrasion wear index is lower. Attachment: picture

Olefin separation technology

The process gases from FMTP plant are mainly ethylene and propylene. In the meantime, it also contains multiple constituents such as methane, ethane, propane, butene, butane, pentadiene, pentane, methanol, dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen gas, methyl acetylene, 1,3-butadiene, etc. For downstream units of commercial project, usually polymerization grade olefin is required. It has high quality requirement for propylene and ethylene, so deep separation is required for the process gases.

ECEC has developed propane - ethane mixed solvent and intercooling demethanization technology, respectively using two separation flows - front end depropanization and sequence separation.

Features of olefin separation technology:

As compared with existing industrial technology, the olefin separation technology under independent development of East China Engineering Science and Technology Co., Ltd. under its sole proprietary intellectual property rights has the following advantages:

Intercooling oil absorption technology of sole proprietary intellectual property rights is used. Ethylene content in dry gas can be controlled below 1% mol and ethylene yield is high. In the meantime, it avoid ethylene compressor, which can reduce capital investment and plant operation difficulty.

According to the feature of catalyst, sequence separation flow is used, which has the technical features of low energy consumption and easy operation, etc. Running cost of plant can be reduced by above 5%.
